Publisher's summary

Auschwitz, 1941: It was her father’s job to save the lives of the SS. But she chose to risk everything and save the lives of prisoners.

In Nazi-occupied Poland, Sofia cannot look her father in the eye. Sofia’s mother, her papa’s cherished wife, is Jewish—how dare he work as a doctor for the SS? She cannot forgive him, even if the bargain was made to spare their lives.

In the middle of the night, Isaac emerges from a packed train with hundreds of others. Beneath Auschwitz’s barbed wire, soldiers surround them, and gunshots pierce the dark sky. The SS decide prisoners’ fates on the spot—and Isaac is chosen to work, rather than to die.

Every day, Isaac and his fellow inmates are sent to a nearby farm. From sunup to sundown, they toil the land with barely a scrap to eat. Every breath feels like it could be Isaac’s last, so when he sees a beautiful auburn-haired girl peering out of the farmhouse window, it feels like a dream....

Sofia refuses to accept what she is seeing. Disobeying her father and evading the guards, she risks her life to sneak a letter to the green-eyed boy outside. She explains that she has hidden them food and that she’ll do everything in her power to save them.

This secret exchange sparks an escape that should have been impossible—and a love story that is unforgettable. But is love enough in the face of evil? And when Sofia and Isaac are concealed underground, holding their breath as the Nazis hunt them, will they survive?

Fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, The Choice, and Orphan Train will be utterly gripped by this heartbreaking tale. This tear-jerker shows that even if your freedom has been robbed and your loved ones torn from you, nobody can steal your hope....

A little different

This book is a little different from the normal WWII historical fiction. I liked it. Not your typical outcome. Nice to hear of a different type of survivor.
The narrator was excellent and made the book that much more enjoyable.
Worth the read!!

Wrenching and beautiful

The resilience that love provides is beautiful. One can endure so much if they know that they are connected with someone that loves them!

Survival

The horror one must endure. Man’s inhumanity to man. We can survive anything with the faith of God.

Me .. me .. me

The premise was very promising. Narrator was pretty good ... but the two lead female characters (Sofia & her Mother) were so selfish and so
just plain awful to the father that I found them incredibly hard to like.
I will not spoil it but the half baked schemes they come up with .. especially toward the end .. were totally unbelievable. Much of the story was just useless dialogue ... the epilogue did not even help with feeling good about the book. Frankly, I was glad to see it end.

Strength and Eve-opening

Spoilers:
Holy crap best written, narrated, inspirational, survivor story. I was moved and in tears for knowing that they survived. An emotional rollercoaster that had a true crime, horror, dark history, disabled, biracial, immigrant child of a ‘radical’ liberal couple, 25 year old girl bawling.

Excellent

I loved this story! The characters were interesting. It wasn’t particularly graphic, but still conveyed a realistic perspective of the time.

Beautiful story

It was a beautiful story about love and resilience. It underscored the choices people had to make during the holocaust.

Great story

It was a very moving story set in the most horrific time. I had a knot in my chest while I listened.

Heartwarming and so sad

Hard to imagine that humans perform such horrific acts against those who have human differences and that others are brainwashed into believing and following!!!

I think this is historical fiction. Plz correct me if wrong. Good story but I would rather read true life recollections
