Publisher's summary

Join Flora Steele - bookshop owner, bicycle-rider, daydreamer, and amateur detective - in her quest to solve a brand-new murder mystery!

Cornwall, 1956: When Flora Steele sets off for a peaceful vacation with crime writer Jack Carrington in his little red Austin, the last thing she expects to find is a body at their pretty rental cottage!

Shocked by the discovery, inquisitive Flora joins forces with handsome Jack to find out how the poor man came to such an untimely end in the overgrown orchard of Primrose Cottage. They discover Roger Gifford was a man with plenty of friends, and the villagers seem devastated by his sudden death....

So why was he murdered? And who has blood on their hands? His estranged wife, Beatrice, his wayward younger brother, Lionel, or the suspicious newcomer, Mercy Dearlove?

The baffling case gets even more complicated when a second man is found dead, and a set of puzzling clues leads them to an intriguing wartime mystery, connected to Jack’s estranged father.

As old secrets emerge and Jack receives an unsettling letter, it seems the crime writer is in danger of a fate befitting his fictional characters.

Will Flora be able to crack the case and save Jack? Or will this be one murder too many for Flora Steele?

Another Great Read

Flora and Jack are actually going to Cornwall where Jack plans to work on his latest book, and Flora assists while getting a much needed rest. Needless to say, things don't work out quite as planned. Murder may have become the expected but spies and witches? All in all, this was an engaging read. It dragged a bit in spots as Jack grappled with his book, but I cannot wait for Flora and Jack's next adventure.

Highly Recommend

Exceptionally well written and very talented narration. The story is rich in details, with interesting insights into Cornish WWII history and well developed characters. I really enjoyed this book and plan to listen to the rest of the series.

Great reader

The story was quite interesting, had the villain figured out pretty soon-
But the history of the signal was worth the listen

Transported in time.

I felted as if I was right there with them.
I could visualize the places and feel all the emotions.
The hint of romance it gives was just fine.
Definitely would recommend! 👍

Can't wait for more!

I loved this old-fashioned mystery, from a time where manners were important, and I learned a lot about the English involvement during WW2. I've listened to all three of the series this far, and have signed up to get notification for the next one!
