Publisher's summary

Kim felt sickness sweep over her as she watched little Grace dust off her dirty hands. Blonde curls tumbled around her face. Then, Grace disappeared into the crowd. Kim wanted to pause the recording, run outside, and grab her to stop what was about to happen.

One August afternoon, eight-year-old Grace Lennard skips into the garden of the childcare center she attends and vanishes into thin air. Rushing to the scene of Grace’s disappearance, Detective Kim Stone finds a chilling piece of evidence: the engraved heart bracelet belonging to Melody Jones - the little girl who was taken from a playground exactly 25 years ago.

Hours before, Steven Harte had walked into Halesowen police station and confessed to having information that would lead Kim to Melody. And he told Kim she’d have a more urgent problem to deal with first. Now Kim must play Steven’s twisted game if she’s to find Grace alive.

With only 24 hours to make every second of Steven’s interrogation count, and scan his behavior for hidden clues, Kim and her team soon link Steven to the abduction of several vulnerable girls - two were kept for a year and then released, unharmed - but where are Melody and the others?

Then small bones are discovered in the grounds of a local park, and Kim fears the worst.

Kim may think she’s close to convicting a killer, but the case is about to get even more complex. Steven is hiding one final explosive truth, and he’s not the only one. Dr. Alex Thorne - the evil woman Kim did her best to keep behind bars is about to reveal a shocking secret to Kim that will hit her where it hurts the most. Kim knows she must put aside her own demons to save Grace and find the other missing girls in time. But can Kim untangle Steven’s web before any more innocent lives are lost?

An edge-of-your-seat thriller that will leave your heart in your mouth. You will be totally hooked on the utterly addictive, number one, multimillion-copy best-selling Detective Kim Stone series.

There is noone like Kim Stone

I can't describe how much I enjoy Kim Stone. Jan Cramer is incredible, giving everyone their unique voice so that's i don't even need to hear who said what! I would love for Kim Stone to get her own TV show. there is noone like her. Strong, Sweet, Cold, Inteligent, humble just the definition of a strong female lead. and the rest of the team and antagonists are just as strong!

Great continuation *Some Spoilers*

I have no idea what the few negative reviews are about. I’ve read all the books in this series; they’ve all been great.

This one wasn’t the most team-focused(as far as their personal side stories) but I don’t see that as a bad thing. Some in the series are like that.

I love that you get to see this team really hitting its stride together. They have a familiar shorthand that is comfortable.

I also disagree with some reviewers about being tired of Alex. Yes, she is annoying, but Kim is so tough that anyone who can meet her obstinance is likely to figure into the series throughout.
Alex:Stone as Moriarty:Holmes. They’re well matched. Although, I wouldn’t mind Tracey Frost doing some investigating and reporting on Alex…

Two things that did irritate me - where’s Betty?!?! (I think that’s the name of the plant) And why do we not hear about any member of the team going to check up on Kevin’s family? Seems like one of them would stop in from time to time…

Can't wait for the next book!

Master's at their craft.
the narration fits the story perfectly. I appreciate the authors orginal stories. So many times when I read or listen to a book I can find a recycled plot line . Not with these books. I highly recommend this book.

Wow did not see that coming!

I will not give a book summary. I will give an unspoiled short review. Fantastic book and I was truly surprised at the shocking ending. Also the ending was sad because it proves that making a decision is not always black and white. Damn. I can't wait to read the next book.

Possibly the best one

I’ve listened to them all. This is possibly the best one now, and the performance, as always, was great.

A stunning twist!

It’s the 25th anniversary of the day 7-year old Melody Jones was abducted and never seen again. Wealthy businessman and philanthropist Steven Harte presents himself at the police precinct of DI Kim Stone and declares he has information related to her abduction. Hours later, 8-year old Grace Lennard is abducted from her day care and there’s evidence that she’s been taken by the same person who took Melody. Meanwhile, the evil psychologist from hell known as Dr. Alexandra (Alex) Thorne, is scheming to be recommended for release at her upcoming parole hearing. It’s all enough to provide Kim and her team many sleepless nights as they work to find Grace.

I’m always nervous when I read stories involving child abductions and nothing about this one gave me relief. Add Alex Thorne to the mix and it is a heartburn brew. Steven Harte was a perplexing issue throughout as I couldn’t decide if he was guilty or not, though he was certainly involved in some manner. I loved the procedurals in this story as Kim’s team, including profiler Alison Lowe, are top notch as usual, moving the investigation along at breakneck speed.

Without saying much more, this was a baffling case that had one stunner of a twist. The secondary plot (though it is equally weighted) involving Alex just raised my ire. Everything about it annoyed me but I’m certain that’s what the author intended. I’m now highly invested in the next release in this series. I can’t believe I’ve caught up and don’t have another book waiting in the wings for next month. I’ll be spending a precious Audible credit when it’s ready because the narrator is the voice in my head for these characters and the storytelling. She’s that good and I’ll always listen to this series because of her consistently outstanding performances.
