Publisher's summary

"I tried to talk to you today but you snubbed me and walked away. It wasn’t wise to give me the brush-off, Gemma. I can be a truly good friend but I also make the perfect enemy."

Sasha’s 18-year-old daughter Gemma was all she had in the world. Sasha fell pregnant with Gemma when she was still at school, and the two are as close as sisters. So when Gemma’s burned and broken body is found, Sasha’s world ends. What kind of person would want her beautiful daughter dead?

Leading the case is Detective Natalie Ward, scarred by her own recent tragedy. When she finds a note in Gemma’s diary from "a secret admirer", she moves quickly, determined to unmask them. But interviews with Gemma’s devastated ex-boyfriend, and her charismatic teacher, who has been seen embracing his student far away from the classroom, don’t give Natalie the answers she’d hoped for....

And then the case takes a devastating, personal twist. CCTV footage reveals Natalie’s estranged husband David followed Gemma home every evening the week before she died.

Natalie is forced to put personal feelings aside and follow procedure, even though she can’t believe David could be guilty. But when Gemma’s housemate is found murdered, Natalie thinks the killer could still be at large. Is she right to trust her instincts about David and can she discover the truth before another precious life is taken?

Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Rachel Abbott, and Karin Slaughter.

This series always provides a good listen

Oh, Natalie. As she decides to go back to work after bereavement leave, she’s assigned to head a team (her old team) investigating the murder of a young university student. And again, as in her previous stories, she has to deal with a marriage that’s breaking up. The crimes (yes, more than one) bring Natalie’s estranged husband to the station and there’s a lot going on.

Very interesting investigation and I didn’t figure it out until the end.

The narration by Diana Croft adds positively to the story.

Now the wait for the next book starts.

Slow

I loved the premise of thus book buf after a while it was difficult to continue listening. The story drag and the characters weren't developed took me several days to finished.

Edge of my Seat

It is not often that a story keeps me in suspense as long as this one did! I honestly didn’t figure it out until very close to the end! Excellent, excellent! So happy too that Natalie appears to be finding some happiness and closure, can’t wait for the next one.

Voices

With such a wonderful winding tale, with so many specific voices telling it, I wish the author had had a better reader, or had several readers. accents were horrible, voices interchanged so i wasn't sure which character was speaking, or even what they were saying at times. the worst was a college male who's accent was undefinable and as such should not have been attempted. Either get more performers or stop trying accents.
