Publisher's summary

Meet Sukey Reynolds: proud mother, wonderful cook...and police photographer turned amateur detective.

Years ago, Sukey was hoping to become a detective, but life took a different turn. Now she’s happy to be involved with the local police force, as long as she still gets to work the occasional murder case....

When Sukey arrives to photograph the body of Lorraine Chant, the beautiful wife of a wealthy businessman, she’s baffled. At first, it looks like a botched burglary, as the huge family safe has been left wide open and empty. But why does Lorraine’s rich husband claim nothing was taken? And what is he not telling the police?

Deciding to do a little investigating of her own, things take a darker turn for Sukey when she is set upon by a shady figure. What do they think she knows? As Sukey finds herself in the firing line, can she expose the true killer before it’s too late?

If you love murder mysteries by Agatha Christie, Faith Martin, or Joy Ellis, then this novel from the best-selling queen of cozy crime will have you hooked!

Domestic abuse scenes makes this a far from cozy mystery for readers who are victims of this abuse

Not a cozy mystery

Overall I enjoyed this book. The story and the characters were excellent. However I do think the genre of this book is incorrect. The portrayal of domestic violence and rape in these books should exclude it from the genre. I’ve also listened to all of the Melissa Craig series and I’ve found a disturbing pattern of the portrayal of domestic violence and the women that suffer from it in Betty Rowland’s books. There is a very nonchalant tone regarding the horrific abuse of women and the “reasons” given for why the women stay in spite of the abuse is deeply offensive and shows a complete lack of understanding of the psychology of abused women. For example the woman in this book stays bc of money. This has been given as a reason in the Melissa Craig series as well however the reasons abused women stay are far more complex than that and it angers and offends me deeply that Rowland’s portrays domestic violence and rape this way. I really enjoy Rowland’s books but I believe this may be the last one for me.

This is a pretty good mystery. It caught and held my attention, not stopping until the end of the book. The characters are interesting and I liked their even handed use in moving bits of plot smoothly along. No melodramatics except on the bad guys sides. Goodbook, good narrator.

MARVELOUS NARRATION TO A GREAT STORY

I am an avid fan of Betty Rowlands and thought the narration really added to the enjoyment of the story. I am looking forward to more of this series.

Meh

I like the Melissa Craig series more. I thought Sukey would do more investigating. While she did contribute to investigation, she doesn't play a role in it.

An exceptional plot with engaging character development had me listening every chance I got-- elevator, doctor's office and grocery store. Let's have more of Sukey!

Vulgar

Ms Rowland and her publisher need to look up the definition of cozy mystery. it does not include use of the F word among other things. Audible needs to provide some rating system to warn people of offensive material. I purchased the book and Audible doesn't allow returns for cash purchases.
