Detective Josie Quinn

Plot. The Detective Josie Quinn series consists of several police procedurals, most involving missing or murdered women or girls. The setting is a small town in Pennsylvania. Josie's childhood trauma is interwoven into each story; we watch her character struggle with her job, love life, and the brain-twisting murders traversing the series.

Liked, Characters. Stories are initially straightforward who-done-it murders that morph into complex mysteries to enjoy. Josie's circle of friends consists of her fellow cops, the medical examiner, and her boss, each with a unique personality. Her family is initially small, but you'll see it expand as the stories progress. Not too many characters to keep track of - as they are integrated into each story. You'll have fun getting to know the characters and puzzling solutions. You'll find yourself muttering, "Wait ... what?" near the end of most books as the plots twist and surprises abound.

Not so hot. The first three books were poorly narrated by Eilidh Beaton as diction and child-like pronunciation were annoying. But stick with it as the rest are well read by Kate Handford. Production is fine, bumped speed to 1.4 - a preference, not a criticism.

The series is written by Lisa Regan and released from early 2018 through today. Bookouture published iinitially, later picked up by Hachette.

Recommended murder mysteries.

What I needed for this series

Her Mother’s Grave is the third book in Lisa Regan’s Detective Josie Quinn series. Finally, this is the story I so wanted to read about Josie Quinn. In the first two books in the series, I enjoyed the procedural part of the stories, but I felt something missing in the characters. In Her Mother’s Grave, both elements come together perfectly to create a most enjoyable tale of mystery and suspense.

Once again I love the narrator's performance. Eilidh Beaton is excellent bringing Josie Quinn and the other characters to life. Her interpretation of the events in story aid in building the tension and suspense. I couldn't stop listening.

Her Mother’s Grave takes Josie to a crime scene that carries her back to her past. Regan uses short chapter flashbacks to Josie’s childhood that reveal events that she buried and now helps her solve the mystery in her present. They also explain a lot to the reader about her character. I’m not a big fan of flashbacks, but Regan use of short chapters sprinkled in with the current events are well done.

I am now more invested with the characters. Lt. Noah Frawley continues to develop as a strong male character who might grow a more personal relationship with Josie. At this point, it is hard to tell. He continues to be a strong, dependable partner. Her team is extremely loyal even when Josie is a bit unconventional and off-putting. Josie’s grandmother, Lissette is an interesting character. There are times that she seems so supportive of Josie and times that her secrets are questionable. I love it. Detective Gretchen Palmer has a lot of secrets of her own. In this book, her loyalty and support are vital.

I’m still confused about Josie’s relationship with Misty. I still don’t care for her more because of her knowingly cheating with a married man in the first book than anything else. At the same time, it seems that Josie is moving on. Loving Ray’s son is more important than hating his mistress. I don’t know if I will ever change my feeling about Misty, but it is apparent that Misty is going to be a part of the series and Ms. Regan is trying to make her character more likeable.

Her Mother’s Grave has convinced me that this is a series that I want to continue. There are twists and turns in each book. This one continues with some big ones. The crime didn’t follow the path I thought the story was taking. Some tense moments put me on edge and kept me turning the page. I am invested in these characters, and I want to see where Lisa Regan is going to take them in the future.

Horrible New England accent

The stories are very good but it is very difficult to listen to the actress reading them! She mispronounces words and has a very distinct New England accent. In the second book she kept saying obgine for OB/GYN. Very disconcerting! What is the director doing when she is butchering so many words!

Disappointed in narrator

I can’t listen to any more of these books. I couldn’t even understand what word the narrator was even trying to say a couple of times. Too bad because I enjoyed the stories.

My past reviews, narrator Ms. Beaton disappoints

I'm continuing with the series as I enjoy the storyline, but the mistakes from the narrator now have become something I listen FOR.

THANK YOU to Author Lisa Regan for a strong woman lead character!!! I promise to purchase the entire series.

Another fantastic Josie Quinn adventure.

Soooo happy I found this authors work. Cant wait to start the next one. The narrator changing the characters accents randomly kinda bugged me. But overall loved it.

Like the book. Narrator needs work

I like this series.... a lot. However, the narrator (though voice is pleasant to listen to) mispronounces so many basic words that it is severely distracting.
She does a great job with the voices for the characters, even though she does give them somewhat juvenile attitudes (especially Josie). I just wish she would pronounce words, basic simple words, correctly. Do they not have editors listen before putting it out???
