Publisher's summary

They thought they were safe. They were wrong.

The murder of a young prostitute and a baby found abandoned on the same winter night signals the start of a disturbing investigation for Detective Kim Stone - one which brings her face to face with someone from her own horrific childhood.

As more sex workers are murdered in quick succession, each death more violent than the last, Kim and her team realize that the initial killing was no one-off frenzied attack, but a twisted serial killer preying on the vulnerable.

At the same time, the search begins for the desperate woman who left her newborn baby at the station - but what looks like a tragic abandonment turns even more sinister when a case of modern slavery is uncovered.

The two investigations bring the team into a terrifying world of human exploitation and cruelty - and a showdown that puts Kim's life at risk as shocking secrets from her own past come to light.

Kim Stone is back as fierce as ever

I'm so glad there was another Kim Stone book!

This was a great read/listen. The audiobook was well done with an excellent narration by Jan Cramer.

Kim and her team are left an abandoned baby in the midst of the murder(s) of "sex workers" and a man found broken and dead. How these all come together - throw in some white slavers - form the basis of another good story by Angela Marsons. My only regret is that now I have to wait for Book 8.

Would have given it 5 stars across the board but..

Writer and editors need to learn the difference between implied and inferred. The word inferred was used when implied should have been used (note: you can infer from an implication, not the other way around). I know, it sounds lame but I have been a professional writer and editor for over 2 decades and mistakes like this pull me from my suspension of disbelief...

Kim Stone, you've gotta like her

As with most detective novels, it's the detective and their usual warped personality that keeps you coming back for more. It was the case for me in this book.

I didn't find the plot of this book incredibly exciting, the recruitment of young girls for prostitution, although I wondered about myself not finding it more interesting. Young girls in the midst of growing up, having doubts about that, fighting with their parents, and falling prey to bad people that would exploit them.

But the author weaves several crimes into the story and by the back third of the story you are really rolling along with it. If you've made it this far into the series, you may as well keep going.

A shocking end

Love her books as there are always twists and turns that take you by surprise. The narrator has the snark of DI Kim Stone down perfectly which makes listening so much fun.
