Summary

Join Flora Steele - bookshop owner, bicycle-rider, daydreamer, and amateur detective - in her quest to solve a brand-new murder mystery!

Cornwall, 1956: When Flora Steele sets off for a peaceful vacation with crime writer Jack Carrington in his little red Austin, the last thing she expects to find is a body at their pretty rental cottage!

Shocked by the discovery, inquisitive Flora joins forces with handsome Jack to find out how the poor man came to such an untimely end in the overgrown orchard of Primrose Cottage. They discover Roger Gifford was a man with plenty of friends, and the villagers seem devastated by his sudden death....

So why was he murdered? And who has blood on their hands? His estranged wife, Beatrice, his wayward younger brother, Lionel, or the suspicious newcomer, Mercy Dearlove?

The baffling case gets even more complicated when a second man is found dead, and a set of puzzling clues leads them to an intriguing wartime mystery, connected to Jack’s estranged father.

As old secrets emerge and Jack receives an unsettling letter, it seems the crime writer is in danger of a fate befitting his fictional characters.

Will Flora be able to crack the case and save Jack? Or will this be one murder too many for Flora Steele?

Really enjoyed this audio book

I really enjoyed this audio book, perhaps not everyone's cup of tea as these are not gritty murder mysteries but such easy listening to help me sleep at night.
I like the characters and the stories are set in a time I can relate to, when life seemed simpler. On a par with Agatha Christie, looking forward to the next one.

Story good

Even though written in a time just after the war, it was still of interest. The only thing I didn’t like was the narrators take on the story and made it sound like an Enid Blyton’s famous five adventure.

Love this series

This is one of my new favourite book series. Charlie's narration is excellent. I really like the characters and their relationship but do hope it becomes romantic, they are already like a married couple. It would be great to hear some cheeky banter. "You know you love me!" " No, sorry, I don't ever remember saying that? " "Don't make me use this book as a murder weapon!" Oh yeah, don't make run you over with your own bike, bury the body and use it as the theme for my next book... " " You wouldn't? " "Try me..." "Err, if I kiss you, will that suppress your urge to kill me?" "Maybe, but, I can't promise anything?" The characters are very likeable and the story is very enjoyable. I did work out who the killer was about halfway through, and was please with the ending with the refreshing reversal of the situation with the killer. During Covid I have now listened to nearly 200 murder mystery books. I hope to hear a lot more from Merryn with these books.

Wonderful mystery

Absolutely love this series, Flora is so likeable and relatable and it was fun to see the characters out of their usual village setting. Enjoyed the inclusion of the signal centre and D-day. Can’t wait for the next story!
