Summary

After the black sheep of the Fulton family is found dead, the village of Saxford St Peter is quick to blame it on his past misdeeds. But Eve Mallow is on the hunt for someone closer to home....

When the down-on-his-luck Emory Fulton moves into the crumbling Magpie Lodge and starts running historical tours, the locals are none too pleased. He’s inventing grisly tales about their lovely little village and disturbing everyone’s peace.

But then he’s found dead in his bath, and everyone is suddenly running scared. Could something strange be happening? After all, the murder mirrors one of Fulton’s stories about Saxford’s dark past....

But Eve Mallow is sure the answers lie in much more recent events.

Accompanied by her stalwart dachshund sidekick, Gus, she starts to dig a little deeper. Could it be Fulton’s snobbish bigwig brother or the suspicious local academic? Why was his goddaughter handing him mysterious parcels, and why wouldn’t his sister-in-law let him in her house?

As Eve unravels the secrets of the living and the dead, one thing is for sure: Fulton was a haunted, hunted man. And if Eve doesn’t crack the case soon, she might find whoever wanted to keep Fulton quiet on her trail, too....

They just get better and better

I’m by working my way through these books. They’re such good reads. The plot has enough twists to keep you on your toes and the characterisations are very well developed, with regulars becoming more nuanced with each story.

Another fantastic story from Clare Chase

I love this book series, Eilidh Beaton is a wonderful narrator she brings the characters to life in my head so much I can picture the scenes. I am really happy that there is more with Robin, I really like the fact that him and Eve are in a relationship. Even though it seems more like an affair with all the sneaking around. I want to see more of them working together. During COVID I have listened to over 150 murder mystery books, so I like it when there is something different in the twist. I would love to see Clare Chase change up her structure a bit and have a story that is set outside the county or I would like to see Eve working with the police for a change, with the chief inspector on leave and the two nice detectives actually consulting with Eve face to face at Monty's and Viv listening in and asking questions while giving the directives cake. I would also really like to see Eve's twins involved in a story where they have to go undercover while Eve and Robin investigate strange goings on while the family are on holiday together for Eve's birthday? Maybe we find out Robin has a daughter who he has to keep secret and she knows all about Eve and her dad and needs help? So the Whole family come together and we see the dynamic of Eve's twins with Robins daughter Esme and we see Eve and Robin grow closer and theres some fun banter about the parentals needing to be alone and the youngsters arguing about who the killer is and having bets about who is going to walk the dog because they are wrong "Of course the Gillie did it, in the billiard room with with the fishing line, as a garotte!" "I... actually thinking about it that is possible, but why?" "He was secretly engaged in espionage listening to company CEO's discussing company secrets while they were on holiday fishing in the middle of know where?" "That is... wait did you just make that up, because for you that is brilliant and oddly specific?" A bit more playful than what we have gotten before. I love Viv as the comic relief and I personally feel sometimes there needs to be a bit more? I really enjoyed this book the story was interesting and I had an idea but that wasn't what I was expecting, however I would like to see a different type of ending they are a bit formulaic with the final act. So many writers do this, the killer has been found out and is now going to kill to protect their secret, rather than do a runner or have a compelling story so you actually want to murderer to get away with it. Or we have to murderer do something so unexpected that we are like, ok I was not expecting that!

I've enjoyed a few books by Clare Chase,

I've enjoyed a few books by Clare Chase all featuring Eve Marlow - easy listening, murder mystery but not too gritty, which I like - sort of on a par with Agatha Christie

okay but not great......

Very formulaic series of novels. The problem for me is I just don't like Eve the main character, she is nosey ,a bit two faced and in this latest story her pushy nosiness ends in disaster (can't say too much or spoiler alert needed) I like the other characters and the threads work pretty well so I tend to buy these when on special offers.
