Summary

The trees are green and hedgerows are bursting with new life as spring arrives in the Cotswolds, but inside a house that Melissa Craig used to know well, something terrible has happened....

Melissa has just finished writing her latest mystery novel and is enjoying the arrival of spring. She’s decided to let her fictional detective retire at last and perhaps put her own days of investigating behind her, too. But the ink has barely dried on the page when Melissa receives shocking news: Her estranged father has been found dead in the family home and her mother, Sylvia, is under suspicion of murder.

Melissa hasn’t seen her parents for nearly 30 years, but on hearing the dreadful news she rushes to her mother’s side. Melissa is sure that Sylvia could never commit a murder, but Sylvia does seem to be keeping secrets....

With no one else to turn to, Sylvia begs Melissa to investigate the case. Melissa knows her father was a difficult man, but now she needs to work out who wanted him dead...a disgruntled employee, the controlling family lawyer, or perhaps the woman with whom he was having an affair?

When another body is found, Melissa realizes she’s dealing with a ruthless killer. As the police close in, trying to pin both deaths on her mother, Melissa must act fast. Can she find a way to unmask the true killer before she loses her mother for a second time and possibly forever?

If you can’t get enough of murder mysteries by Agatha Christie, Faith Martin or P. D. James, you’ll love this twisty detective novel!

This book was previously published as The Fourth Suspect.

"An absolutely addictive, wonderful story. Loved it from start to finish. Great pace and a delightful setting, colourful characters and thrilling mystery. This was a brilliant story and I cannot wait for more!" (Renita D’Silva, author of The Forgotten Daughter, five stars)

"Once I started reading I couldn't put it down as it was entertaining and enthralling.... The mystery was interesting and it kept me guessing till the end.... Highly recommended!" (Scrapping and Playing, five stars)

"The quintessential cozy mystery...the storyline is fast-paced and engaging...builds to an adrenaline fuelled ending, full of action and powerful imagery. An enjoyable, escapist read that I suspect may become my secret addiction." (Jane Hunt’s Blog, five stars)

Really dislike narrator's vioce.

I disliked some of the voices the narrator used for characters. They were so stressed and unreal. Would have been good but for that.

One of the best MC books

Intriguing, suspenseful and captivating right up until the big reveal. The personal storyline for the main character running throughout was a perfect balance for the deceit and gore.

Just a comment

Very easy listening. However, just because one is over 60 (or even 70), one doesn’t have to sound elderly. Listen to famous actresses such as Diana Rigg, Helen Mirren or Judi Dench.

Spoiled by the narration

Listening to this book was a struggle between my desire to find out who dunnit and my irritation with the narration. In the end, my irritation won out and I gave up about half-way through.
I wish I'd paid more heed to the other reviewer who complained about the quality of the narration, but I hadn't realised how truly setting-your-teeth-on-edge bad it would be. The worst bits were the dialogue: all the characters (with the exception of the protagonist, Melissa Craig) were given gratingly croaky voices delivered with a sort of arch lilting cadence that made every single one of them appear utterly loathesome. As for the portrayal of Melissa Craig, she was given a mellifluous voice that contrasted strikingly with the croaking whines of her interlocutors. But her soft tones were somehow aloof and condescending so it was impossible to warm to her either.
The narration was so awful that I couldn't tell if the story was well written or not; it all seemed quite unbelievable, but had I cared about any of the characters I might have been more willing to suspend disbelief.

drab and boring story line....

there is no way l would say this book is gripping or unputdownable as thats the only thing l wanted to do with book this , put it down.....The narrator lacked any excitement or emotion for the story line at all.....if l could return it l would but it will stay where it is for a very long time.....on the shelf...
