Summary

Cream teas, buttered crumpets, and a very curious crime…

Melissa Craig is settling in nicely to a new teaching position in the quaint little village of Upper Bembury, getting to know her way around, drinking tea with the eccentric staff, even sewing the first seeds of romance....

But when she arrives one morning to find police outside her classroom, Melissa is shocked to hear that her beautiful colleague Angelica has been found dead in her home. As everyone in Angelica’s life comes under suspicion, Melissa makes it her mission to go in search of the truth, not least because she’s romantically entangled with none other than the police’s prime suspect.

The discovery of a vandalized portrait of the murdered girl might be just the clue that Melissa needs to clear her lover’s name, but when a second body surfaces, she knows she needs to act quickly. Can Melissa uncover the ugly truth in this beautiful village before another innocent life is taken?

Do you love murder mysteries by Agatha Christie, P.D. James, and Faith Martin? If so, you'll really enjoy listening to this puzzling and absolutely page-turning whodunit!

Amateur sleuth does it again

Melissa Craig like Jessica fletcher finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery, and like any self respecting amateur sleuth would do, she sets to work and trying to find the clues and solve the crime before the police do, a fun read with a good storyline and great characters. A beautifully narrated story.

Excellent including Narrator’s performance

Excellent plot and characters.

I’m somewhat surprised at previous reviewers criticism of narrator as I think Joan Walker’s performance is excellent - her voice and pace capturing the personality of each character.

Next in series already in my wish list.

Good but easy to guess the culprit

I enjoyed this mystery and will definitely listen to the others, but it was too easy to guess the culprit in this story. Melissa should have guessed it too!!

Unlike other reviewers I found the narrator fine.
As usual the characters were well crafted and believable

Enjoyable

I found Melissa's refusal to be objective so annoying that I ended up hoping Barney would turn out to be the murderer after all. Will have to read the book to be able to decide if it was the text or the performance that made me feel this way.

terrible narration

I really enjoy the Melissa Craig books, but the narration is truly awful. she constantly uses a weird, croaky , singsongy voice for all the caracters. its very hard to tell them apart. I couldn't listen to this narrator again

Reader is awful..

Really enjoyable book, good story. HOWEVER, the narrator was awful. All characters sound the same. Won't buy another because of her. pity.

Terrible narration

The story was good and the characters believable. The only thing that let it down was the over the top voice of the narrator. She tries to over emphasize the speech like she's over acting a part. Spoils what is a good book
