Alex Appleby aged 44 is a recovering Anorexic working as a seamstress in Tynemouth. She's been at rock-bottom and managing to climb back up. A credible perceptive portrait of her condition with controlling behaviour, OCD, delusions, hallucinations and manipulation that was thrown into the pot. At a support group, she gravitates towards Carrie aged 24 who deems to be terminally ill with cancer. Alex can't do enough to make Carrie's path easier as she has chemo treatment and raises money for her. At first, I thought they weren't soul-mates and seemed more like polite strangers but they have more in common than it first appears. Then a grenade is tossed into the relationship as Alex becomes suspicious that Carrie is not the woman she thinks she is and starts to check her out. What is going on? Alex is way out of line, and it beggars belief how invasive she becomes with her interfering and controlling behaviour. One of them is a pathological liar; the other a professed liar. The scandalous duplicity made my head reel, and I became hopelessly baffled between truth and lies. Nobody trusts a liar even when they tell the truth. It surprises me what lengths people will go to to find love, acceptance and fit in. Is Carrie mad or bad? I found the format baffling with the "then and now" and I had to keep backtracking. I didn't like the long-winded letter at the end. It's a fairly slow read but an interesting one with a deliciously complex theme. I really enjoyed it. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC in exchange for a review.

Alex is battling anorexia, while also dealing with the loss of her husband and children. She joins a support group for people going through various traumas and meets Carrie, who has terminal cancer. The two hit it off immediately and become best friends. When mysterious packages and envelopes start showing up, each bearing ominous messages, Alex is determined to find out who is after Carrie and why. This book left my head reeling. There were so many lies that I didn't know who or what to believe. If you are in the mood for a good thriller, then I think you have met your match.

I found this slow to start but once it picked up I became more engrossed with the story. This book wasn't my favorite, however Copperthwaite is an excellent writer and her characters and story are very believable. I'm looking forward to reading her next book.
