When, in the space of one blurb, you see phrases like "An absolutely gripping psychological thriller" and "The most gripping psychological thriller you’ll read this year," you tend to expect big things. At least I did. However, I didn't find those things in Closer. I would not call this story a psychological thriller. There are some psychological elements, but the best I would go is domestic drama with the occasional sinister bit. There are some current and serious issues tackled here, but if the point was to "grip" the reader, it certainly missed the mark with me. Unlikable characters aside, and there were plenty, most of the story was drawn out and well, rather boring, and there were odd chapters here and there that seemed out of place with the rest of the story. I got where those chapters were supposed to be going, and we do finally get to the big reveal. I suppose that's where the thriller part should've kicked in, but I already had most of it figured out and after all the lag time, it all comes together in a few abrupt pages. I should mention that there is a big twist at the end, like the last two pages of the book, but that wasn't exactly hard to see coming either, and after everything else, it was just too little, too late. I've seen many rave reviews about this book, so maybe it's just me, but this is most definitely not the most gripping anything that I've read this year.

My Review: If I had to describe this book in three words I would say loved, loved and loved. This author has proven to me on many occasions on why she is in my top ten favorite authors list. I have read almost all of her books now and I have enjoyed every single one of them. If you love psychological thrillers then you will love this one. I want to start off by saying that this book really put the fear of god into me about having a stepparent involved in my child’s life. I personally had two wonderful stepparents but this book really made me think it could have went another way. Ok so I want to start off by saying how bad I felt for Maisie. Her parents split up and all of a sudden her father is dating someone else and she is devastated. I have to say that the author did a great job with showing how much it hurts when parents split up. She even brought back up emotions within me from when my parents split up and that over thirty years ago. Kudos to the author for that. Now let’s talk about that shocker of an ending. All I have to say is OMG!!!!! I couldn’t believe it. It was like a wild roller coaster ride I never wanted to get off from. There was so many twists and turns that it made my head spin. Just when I thought I knew what was going on BAM the author throws in another fork in the road. KL Slater as long as you promise to never stop writing books I will promise to keep reading them. Between the plot, characters and all the twists in this book it made it an easy and fast read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Good, gripping read with plot twist that truly surprised me. Slow burn but still quick enough to keep you interested. Ending escalated very quickly and was over all of a sudden and it felt like there was a bit of a loose end because it's clear what we think is about to happen but will never know, as the book ends! An easy thriller with a bit of substance for a weekend binge.
