About this ebook

How far would you go to keep your daughter safe?

Everyone knows Leona would do anything for her daughter, Beth: she moved to Church Langdon to send Beth to the best school, built a business to support them and found the perfect little cottage to call home. They hike together, shop together, share their hopes and fears. It’s the relationship every mother dreams of.

But Leona never talks about why they moved to the Lake District.

She’s never told Beth anything about her father.

She says Beth should never speak to strangers. She says Beth doesn’t need friends.

She’s only trying to protect her daughter.

But sometimes the person closest to you is the person you shouldn’t trust.

What She Saw is a gripping psychological thriller with an incredible twist that will make your jaw drop. If you love The Girl on the Train, Gone Girl or anything by B. A. Paris you’ll be consumed by this.

They say there is no greater love than a mother’s love for their child. This is the case for Leona and her daughter Beth. The bond they share appears unbreakable and Leona has gone above and beyond to make sure Beth has had the best in life. But Leona’s love has come with a price, she has alienated her daughter from the world, causing Beth now a teenager to pull away from her as she struggles to fit in at school with her peers. There is a reason why Leona has been so fiercely protective of her daughter and the life she has built for them. She has a secret from her past, that if revealed, could lead to dangerous consequences for them both as well as Leona’s ‘husband’ Scott As the story progresses we are shown glimpses of Leona’s past and we are soon privy to what she has been hiding, and the struggles she endured during a horrific time in her life which shows why she is so protective of her family. When Beth comes across a hidden envelope containing information pertaining to her mother’s past, Leona has no choice but to reveal her secret which in turn puts all of their lives in danger! This story started gently, easing the reader into it, then building momentum to an explosive heart pounding conclusion which was fabulous! I still cannot believe that this is Wendy’s first psychological thriller! I was hooked from the start and read this in one sitting as I could not get enough! It is so well written and shows a confidence that you would think that Wendy has been writing in this genre for years, and I hope that she will continue to do so. The characters were very relatable and I really resonated with them. I felt each emotion that they all went through especially with Beth. I was really drawn to her character and felt her pain as she tried to find her place in the world. I also loved the descriptions of Beth’s artwork and of the Lake District setting where the book was set. This is a brilliant read and I look forward to more of Wendy’s work in the future. Write fast Wendy! 😜 I can not recommend this book highly enough and I am thrilled to have a new favourite author to add to my list. A BIG ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars from me!

This is a good read; a story with twists and turns and a couple of intertwined stories. Leona and her daughter have always been close, but as Beth hits her middle teens the barriers are up. Leona feels her life beginning to fall apart when she suffers a series of panic attacks. Unable to confide in her partner or her beloved daughter, she finds the past closing in on her. Beth has her own worries - attending a school where she stands out for being normal, she is unhappy and unable to share with her mum. As the story unfolds, we get to understand more of what's going on with both their lives . . . I enjoyed this one. Flowing smoothly, it's a well-written novel. However, for me, the clues were just a bit obvious and for the most part what happened next was what I expected - it held few surprises for me. Perhaps I've just read too many psychological thrillers lately? Not that it takes away from the fact that this is an excellent debut novel and Wendy Clarke is an author I would be happy to read again. For me, it's well worth four stars.
