Maisie has had a rough go of it the last little bit – her husband was cheating on her at their work, catching him not long after losing her Mum and still worried about her Dad. Squeaking by in a little one bedroom flat and working two jobs, her already depressing situation is preying on her mind, as she’s worried about her depression returning and gaining more of a foothold. She’s tired of the Liverpool rainy and grey days, is finding it harder to just ‘brush off’ little annoyances, and feeling stuck as she can’t afford a getaway. But, her obsession with entering contests for travel abroad turns up a winner, and a prize of a week’s stay in Tuscany with some spending money arrives in the post. Feeling like she’d like her two best friends to come along, soon Maisie, Emma and Cheryl are soaking up the sun and ambiance in a holiday apartment, with nothing more than a week of sunshine, sights and good food ahead. Far from being a travelogue story, although we are given moments in Florence, Siena and Pisa as well as the little village near the apartment and the accommodations themselves, the story is a rebirth for all three women: giving them a change of perspective to look back on their lives at home in Liverpool and to think of what they may want. Most daring of all, surprisingly, is Maisie, for with her marriage ending, and nothing all that exciting to return back for, an accident in which she was hit crossing the road in Florence may just have provided her with the clearance to think seriously about staying, at least for the summer. With a budding romance with Gianni, son of the couple that owns the holiday let, and an offer of a job from a local vintner who needs help with customers after their vineyard and tasting tours, she’s got opportunity and options open – and a new outlook as both the sunshine and the lifestyle seem to suit both her mood and her heart. Much like the other two I’ve read from Roberts, the “escape for more” feeling and plot is strong in this book – and the characters manage to grab every opportunity with a spirit that is lightened and enhanced with the weather and the ‘vacation’ vibe. With solid characters, some seriously lovely descriptions of food and wine, and a clear glut of bonhomie and heart warned in the Tuscan sun, the story is that perfect getaway read for the rather dull and grey weather as spring seems so far away.
