The Women Upstairs, the second novel by Ruth Heald is one cracker of a read. It is captivating, creepy as hell, disturbing, full of twists and turns and I absolutely loved it! As the blurb states “prepared to be kept up way past your bedtime as you race through this addictive page-turner.” This could not be more true. I was like superglue stuck to the pages racing through it as I could not get enough. I was torn wanting to savour it but also wanting to know how it was all going to unfold. Ruth has crafted two stories that takes you from the present day to flashbacks of the past. In one story we have Katie. She is casually seeing Ian and becomes pregnant with twins. Ian moves them into a huge mansion that is completely run down and has a mysterious past. She befriends Paula, a doula who offers Katie help and takes advantage of her vulnerable state by quickly moving herself into the house and where she takes control much to the annoyance of Ian and Katies mother, who both feel that something is not quite right with Paula. In the other story, we are told a chilling tale of two twin sisters growing up in an abusive household which at times can be hard to read. As the story progresses, the two stories come together seamlessly and just when you think all is going to be revealed as you thought it was going to be, Ruth beautifully throws in a curveball with a twist to end all twists that took my breath away. The characters are extremely well developed and felt very real to me. Katie is a strong character but is vulnerable and overwhelmed and is an easy target for manipulation not only by Paula, but also Ian and both take advantage of this. Paula is a fascinating character. She has been brought to life beautifully and right from the start I had a feeling of unease around her. When Ian disappears and the babies are born, this feeling intensifies as her behaviour becomes more erratic. There is so much to her character and her backstory. I could not connect with Ian which is not a bad thing. There always has to be an unlikeable character for me and Ian fits the bill perfectly. He is unreliable and you just know there is something with him that is not right. I did like how I kept second guessing myself with him though. I enjoyed Ruth’s debut novel The Mother’s Mistake and I normally don’t like to compare, but with The Woman Upstairs I feel that Ruth has definitely grown as a writer and shows more confidence in the storytelling throughout the pages this time around. The writing is impeccable, fluid and engaging and it kept me enthralled. The tension built throughout, gave me many heart pounding moments and I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see how it was all going to unfold and I was not disappointed. A great job has been done with this book. So I think you know the answer to this question but I’ll put it here anyway. Do I recommend this book? Um let me think about it……..YES I do! This is a brilliant read that will have you gripped from the start till the thrilling conclusion. Make sure you also read Ruth’s note at the end of the book which gives you a great insight as to how this story came about. wow this book was amazing I really loved all the twists and Turns many I didn't see coming I also loved the little chapters in between which shows the sad life of the two young twins I won't spoil it for you just make sure you pick up this book and get Reading this book would also be great made as a film it's definitely five stars from me

I absolutely loved this book! It was very difficult to put down when my lunch break was over or break or midnight having to get up early the next day! It was definitely a page turner and I will definitely be buying more of her books! Just downloaded the next one! Thank you for such a wonderful read!
