About this ebook

‘Wow!!... I was left quite breathless… Kept me gripped.’ Book Reviews by Shalini

Eddie stands at his door anxiously waiting for her to arrive, touching the box in his pocket for luck. He doesn’t hear the footsteps behind him until it’s too late…

Detective Finnegan Beck is called to a violent crime scene at a remote house near the rural Irish town of Cross Beg, where a dog lies whimpering beside his beloved owner’s body.

At first it looks like a burglary gone wrong. But Beck spots something his colleagues didn’t. The victim, Eddie Kavanagh, was wearing his smartest clothes. He’d brushed his hair. And, on closer inspection, a small velvet box containing an engagement ring is discovered in his pocket, along with a letter to a nameless woman, which seems to suggest she’s in danger.

Those who knew Eddie have no idea about a female friend though – there’s been no one in his life since a girl who he’d loved and who’d broken his heart decades before.

So who was the woman Eddie was waiting for? And did his connection with her ultimately lead to his murder? When a beautiful young woman is then found beaten to death, murdered exactly as Eddie had been, Beck has to ask – is the danger over? Or is it just beginning?

An absolutely addictive and atmospheric crime novel that will leave you gasping for breath. If you love gripping thrillers from Rachel Caine, Robert Dugoni and Kendra Elliot, you won’t be able to put this one down.

This is a an OK book: interesting characters, well written (in parts), good descriptions, a reasonable plot but all those cliched dream sequences and the entirely predictable and boring main character "struggling with his demons". So boring, so Hollywood, so trite. Good writing is a much better and more subtle way to develop character. Spare us the deus ex machina of these weak and tedious cliches.

Evocative, hauntingly beautiful, Her Last Goodnight pulls you into the closed world of rural Ireland. When Eddie Kavanagh is found beaten to death on his remote farm, detective Finnegan Beck is assigned to the case. Beck’s personal history is tragic and he is failing in his fight against his alcoholism. Violence in the small town of Cross Beg escalates and Kavanagh’s death no longer looks like a robbery gone bad. Beck and his partner Claire Somers work at unraveling a series of confusing and unrelated events revealing the evil lying just under the peaceful surface of the town. Past occurrences torment Beck and many of the residents of Cross Beg and lead to an unforeseen ending. While Her Last Goodnight is a standalone mystery, it is one of a series of three by Michael Scanlon. Add Michael Scanlon to the ranks of Tana French and Peter May. A 5 star review.I Thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and Michael Scanlon for this Advanced Review Copy.

Detective Finnegan Beck returns in this latest third installment of Michael Scanlon's Irish crime thriller series. This is my first time reading Scanlon's work, and I plan on catching up on his first two novels for Beck's character alone. I highly enjoyed his strong personality, his confidence, his ability to face his past, and his bad habits on his own terms - the complete 'detective with baggage' package! // Beck is just the type of detective needed to solve the murder of Eddie Kavanagh, an elderly man who was beaten to death while awaiting his lover. Following pure instinct and years of detective experience in Cross Beg and greater Dublin, Ireland Beck brings everything full circle, leaving no stone unturned. More than once, I suspected that I had it all figure out, cuff the perp, and take him away... I was, however, gravely mistaken. The last few chapters were quite a rush, I anxiously raced through them determined to put it all together! // I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in exploring Irish crime thrillers with a strong central character. Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and the author Michael Scanlon for providing me with a complimentary copy of this title in exchange for an honest review. #mistyscornerreviews
