Close to You: A completely gripping psychological thriller

Wow, what a great book this was!!! I have read quite a few of Kerry Wilkinson’s books and this one sure did not disappoint. He really hit a home run with this one. This was a stand alone book. This book was about a woman who thought she was going crazy. She kept seeing her husband who disappeared many years earlier everywhere she went. But she knew that it couldn’t be true as she had killed him and got rid of the body herself. Or did she? Is her mind playing tricks on her? Did he have doppelgänger? Or does someone knows what she did and they are out to get her? All these questions and more are answered. I want to start off by saying that I loved the storyline this book had to offer. I loved the fact you knew right away that the main character killed her husband and you were trying to figure out the whole book whether that was true or if he came back from the dead to haunt her. I couldn’t wait to find out whether this woman was crazy or not. This in itself made it a quick and great read for me. The main character was definitely not likable but that was what the author was going for. He wanted you to know that this person had evil inside of her and she was not this innocent person she betrayed herself as. All of this made the twist at the end so great. I couldn’t believe who was responsible and why they did it. It truly made me believe that no matter how nice a person seems on the outside there is always a mean person waiting on the inside to get out. Between the plot, characters and all the twists in this book it made it an easy and fast read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Having only discovered Kerry’s work this year, this is only the second book I have read of his and it is a beauty! Reading the blurb, it ticked all the boxes for me, but what really got my interest more than anything was the sentences “He didn’t disappear two years ago and he’s not a missing person. I know that for a fact because I’m the one who killed him” how good is that! I couldn’t wait to get stuck into it and when I did it was one hell of a read full of mystery, deceit, secrets and more twists and turns than a rollercoaster ride! Kerry has crafted a chilling plot that see’s main character Morgan’s life unravel when she see a photograph of a man that bears a striking resemblance to her ex husband David, who people believed has disappeared. Knowing that she killed him, two years ago, Morgan is at a loss as to how it’s even possible that he could be alive. But when strange things start happening that all can be related back to David, Morgan starts to question whether or not David was really dead the night she disposed of his body. Whether it was intentional or not, for me I did not like any of the characters in this book. I don’t mean this in a negative way at all as I think they have been perfectly written this way and are very believable in the roles they portray. Morgan as the unreliable narrator is such a complex character who is extremely cold. Circumstances should have made me warm to her but I really struggled to sympathise with her on many occasions. David was unlikeable right from the beginning and as the story progressed that feeling became stronger and stronger. Told through alternating chapters from the present to the past, the tension and suspense that Kerry creates that builds throughout the story could have moved at a quicker pace, but it is all worthwhile when you get to the big reveal. I really did not see how it all unfolds coming. Kerry definitely knows his stuff in this genre and has a gift of keeping the reader hanging on to every written word in the lead up to the conclusion. It has been a pleasure to read and review Close to You which I recommend. He's dead. Dead. Morgan, more than anyone knows this for a fact, 100%. She killed her husband. She disposed of his body. He isn't missing like she's led everyone else to believe. She knows this and yet, two years later, it's as if he's suddenly reappeared. It's simply not possible, but there he is in the back of her 'personal trainer of the year' acceptance photo. David. This premise is exactly what led me to request and dive into, "Close to You" by Kerry Wilkinson. The cover art does well to bring the reader into the main character's persona; she's alone and staring into the lake, recalling the events that led to her husband's untimely demise. The suspense is real and you can feel it as you move through the pages, between what's happening now and why it happened. I've read works by this author before and loved them, fast-paced, twisty and suspenseful. However, for me, this read was a solid 4/5 stars. While the tension was certainly present, what didn't work for me was the pace of the first half of the book and the predictability and repetitiveness of the main character, Morgan Persephone. I found it hard to connect with her personality, for the most part. Morgan settles with David, when most everyone cautions against it, so as not to be alone. She then stays with him, despite his actions, because he's the only one who has ever 'believed' in her. During "The Why" Morgan becomes somewhat predictable. David lies, she forgives him. He showboats to gain the favor of those close to her, she shrugs it off. He follows her and hides in the bushes while she's training a client; when Morgan later confronts him about it he claims to have had a panic attack over their recent argument then proclaims his love and... she forgives him. She loves him too. He exaggerates his career field, she rationalizes his explanations. He lies about his whereabouts to cover his financial insecurities, she agrees to marry him. David goes so far as to 'fantasize' about having kids with Morgan, and she ends up considering the idea. Simultaneously as we journey through "The Now" sections of the book there's this sense of, "Yes, you killed him. Yes, we know. Yes, you got away with it." I did enjoy quite a few of the main characters' one-liners that were dispersed throughout the book though. Here are a few to give you a taste: "There's nothing quite like a good hypocrite."- chapter one. "In my experience, the moment anyone invites you to a party, you start thinking of ways to possibly get out of it." - chapter two. Those bits of internal humor combined with the anticipation of uncloaking the antagonist's identity were the defining parts of this story for me, it's what thrust the last half of the book into a true page-turner. Someone is clearly trying to mess with Morgan, but who? Could David really be back? What of his sister, this Yasmine character we heard so little about? Could David maybe have a secret twin? Could Morgan's best friend Jane have been somehow secretly involved with Morgan's dead husband? What about Jane's husband Ben? Morgan's new boyfriend Andy? Could they somehow have an invested interest in making her suffer? These are all thoughts that crossed my mind while reading. I'm not a believer in spoiling the ending, or revealing the twist at the end - but let's just say it was not at all what I was expecting but definitely worth the race to the finish line once it picked up! I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a suspenseful read, with an interest in marital drama and domestic disturbances.
