It is not very often that I will venture out of my beloved crime thriller genre into Women’s Fiction, but when I read the blurb for My Husband’s Lie, I knew it was one book that I had to read and I am so glad that I did. I absolutely loved this book and devoured it in one sitting! Emma has crafted an intriguing plot that captured my attention immediately. It is a gripping family drama that has you invested in its setting and characters which Emma brings together beautifully through her prose. With such a detailed blurb, I won’t go into any more details on the plot, as it really is best just going in with the information that has been given. With the exception of the obvious few, I really enjoyed all of the characters in this story. I loved Thea who made for a wonderful narrator and her husband Drew and the relationship they shared. Anna, Rob, Rachel and Gerry as friends of Thea and Drew are really strong characters and great assets to the story, but it was the friendship between Thea and Anna’s daughters Lauren and Tilly that I loved the most that provided beautiful moments throughout, Emma’s writing style and narration had me hooked right from the prologue and I was completely in her clutches. There is something old fashioned in her writing that is very comforting and it sparked in me a feeling of peace. This was in spite of some of the topics covered, which are hard-hitting but are also handled with sensitivity. Enthralling, enchanting and utterly captivating is how to best describe this story and it is a book that you should add to your reading list for 2020. It was an absolute pleasure to read and review Her Husband’s Lie which I highly recommend. This is a new direction for author Emma Davies; having loved everything she has written so far I couldn't wait to find out what this was all about! Spotting her childhood home up for sale at a time when her family is considering moving from their London home, Thea can't believe her luck. Her husband, Drew, lived in the house next door and they grew up together, enjoying the kind of village life that they want for their two daughters. After all, life in a small village is always friendly, isn't it? So why does Thea get the feeling that she's being cold-shouldered? Can you ever go back in time, or do we all wear rose-tinted spectacles when thinking of the past? This is a well-plotted and gripping tale which shows the best - and worst - of village living. Moving into any new area can be full of pitfalls; when you don't know how the friendships and hierarchy work it's like being back at school. Thea has no idea what she's stepping into, and neither do we. I love that there is so much happening and yet there are unsolved mysteries in the background. A successful genre-change from an author who always delivers an entertaining read, and a novel which would make an excellent tv drama. I'm very happy to recommend this one, and give it four stars.

Pevensey. The perfect house in the perfect small town. The house where Thea lived an idyllic childhood until she moved away at eleven. Next door to Rose Cottage where she met Drew, her childhood best friend and now husband. When she, a children’s book illustrator with a new, well paying commission, sees that it is listed for sale, Thea quickly moves to buy it. It will be the perfect home for Lauren and Chloe, her two young daughters, and for architect Drew to start his new practice. All goes well at first. The neighbors, Anna and Rob, the local curate, are fast friends. Their daughter Tilly, Lauren and Chloe quickly bond. The problem begins in the village. People who remember Thea as a child go out of their way to avoid her or just stare menacingly in her direction. Her children are ignored at school. Making things far worse, a local schoolboy is a dangerous bully and threatens to harm all three girls. When Thea discovers Tilly, who is partially dibbled, has also been bullied, she decides to fight back. Her Husband’s Lie is about family, friendship, community and about bullying. All themes are treated well and work together perfectly. While I really enjoyed this book and its story of small town life, I had trouble understanding the reason why Thea is ostracized. Things that happened were not her problems. No more discussions to avoid spoilers. 4 stars. Thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and Emma Davies for this ARC
