About this ebook

The sound that wakes her from sleep is unmistakable—someone is in their house. She listens as heavy footsteps start up the stairs, and as the bedroom door is flung open, she doesn’t even have time to scream…

Following a frantic emergency call in the middle of the night, Detective Jenna Alton arrives at a secluded family home to find the body of Lucas Robinson lying in a pool of his own blood in his bed. His wife Carol, shivering in shock, has just watched an intruder shoot her husband in cold blood.

As Jenna investigates the murder, she soon discovers that Lucas was having an affair. And when his mistress is also found strangled to death in the center of the small town, Jenna is convinced that the murderer is living amongst them.

When the killer escalates with a mass murder at a remote ranch on the outskirts of Black Rock Falls, Jenna knows for sure that she’s dealing with a murderer more twisted than any other she’s faced before.

As the town begins to fill with revelers for the annual Halloween festival, Jenna has to work fast to stop any more lives being taken. But as the killer always seems to be one step ahead of the investigation, has she finally met a murderer who can outsmart her?

Fans of Robert Dugoni, Karin Slaughter and Rachel Abbott will love this compelling and nail-biting crime thriller from bestselling author, D.K. Hood.

Detective Jenna Alton, along with her team investigate the murder that started with a home invasion. Before they can really sink their teeth into this killing, the killer escalates with a mass murder at a remote ranch on the outskirts of town. As the investigation continues, they find many more cases spread through several states all bear the same manner of killing .... down to the black feather left at each scene. As the town begins to fill with revelers for the annual Halloween festival, Jenna has to work fast to stop any more lives being taken. Someone is wearing a mask .... and has his eye on Jenna. Although 8th in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone. I highly recommend starting at the beginning ... how Jenna and her team all wound up in the same place for various reasons is well worth reading ... especially as Jenna is not who she says she is. This crime fiction is well written, as are all the books in this series. The plot is tightly woven leading to an explosive unpredictable ending. This one introduces two additional characters who appear to be able to help Jenna and her team with anything that comes up ..... I look forward to seeing more of them. Also a new character is Pumpkin, the cat with the orange eyes who seems to attach himself to Jenna. Wonder what Duke, the dog, will have to say about that. Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

In an upsetting prologue, a woman tries vainly to escape her abusive husband but is killed as her small son watches in horror. Years later, a woman lies terrified in bed as a killer enters her bedroom and shoots her husband as he sleeps next to her. Are these terrible crimes related? How? Even as Sheriff Jenna Alton interviews the wife of the victim, two more bodies are discovered far away from this crime scene. The small town of Black Rock Falls seem an unlikely location for a prolific serial killer but as seemingly unrelated murders start to mount, Alton and her partner Kane must discover the identity of the killer even as the violence escalates. A grisly tableau provides some needed evidence but a surprise twist nearly results in a tragic conclusion. Her Broken Wings has so many strengths: strong, likable characters, a dark and twisted plot, and well written descriptions of police procedure. The 8th in the series, it is not a stand-alone thriller. I wish I had started with the first Alton and Kane mystery because I wanted to know more about their backgrounds and relationships with the medical examiner and FBI profiler. Fans of this series are in for a treat but new readers may want to start at the beginning. 4 stars.
