About this ebook

The girl looked so peaceful, she could have been asleep. Except her eyes were open, blankly reflecting the flickering flames spreading towards her…

When firefighters discover the body of a teenage girl at an abandoned house, Detective Amanda Steele hurries to the scene. Dumfries, Virginia is a small town, yet no one seems to have any idea who the dead girl is until Amanda finds a dragonfly pin with the name Crystal engraved on it.

Working tirelessly, Amanda traces the pin to Crystal Foster, a thirteen-year-old who disappeared three years ago from her wealthy parents’ home. Breaking the news to the distraught parents won’t be easy, but the loss of her own daughter still haunts Amanda, and she knows this will bring them closure. But when Amanda goes to see the Fosters, they do not recognize the girl. She isn’t Crystal.

Before Amanda can react to this new development, she gets an urgent call. A fire has consumed another vacant house, and the remains of two more girls have been found. Who are these girls, and why are they being picked off? Amanda must stop this killer before the pattern continues, and the death toll climbs.

When Amanda receives a taunting note from the killer, she realizes that she holds the missing piece of this puzzle. The victims are connected to Amanda’s past, to a case she can never forget, and which almost claimed her life. As she follows the clues to their deadly conclusion, can she save more innocent lives… even if it risks her own?

An unputdownable, pulse-pounding mystery. Fans of Rachel Caine, Lisa Regan and Robert Dugoni will be gripped.

Amanda Steele and her partner Trent Stenson are called to a house with a body of a young girl in it. The house was burnt to the ground, but there is a clue in it. It is a clue left for Amanda, and it brings back terrible memories for her. Then they find another girl, but she isn't who they thought she was. This is a strong 'mind game' for Amanda. But can she and Trent get through it and find the killer? Or will this be too much for Amanda to handle? I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book from Net Galley.

Detective Amanda Steele are her partner are called to the site of a house fire. The house had been abandoned several months earlier, so who was the female victim found inside doused with gasoline? Working relentlessly trying to identify the victim, she's mortified to learn that another two female victims were found inside another abandoned house, which has burnt to the ground. The only identifying mark the medical examiner has found is a tattoo on one of the victims, It's a mark that Amanda knows only too well. The victims are connected to Amanda’s past, to a case she can never forget, and which almost claimed her life. The intricate plot swirls around multi-layered characters. It's well written with suspense and angst that starts on the very first page and doesn't waver until the very explosive conclusion. Second in the series, it is easily read as a stand alone, but I highly recommend reading the books in order. Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the police procedural/crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Great follow up to book 1, but still can be read as a stand alone. Waiting for book 3!. Amanda Steele is working her way into my heart. She was so broken in book 1, I love watching her put herself together stitch by stitch, and then something happens to unravel one or two She digs deep and keeps putting one foot in front of the other. Twists and surprises ensue, how about that one towards the end?? Not with Amanda. Sorry trying for no spoilers :) Speaking of the ending,.... it is a cliff hanger, but a cliff hanger as to Amanda next step. The crime is resolved in itself, and other doors are open for this series to keep on going, and I am in. Thank you for the arc. I freely share my thoughts and opinions.
