I read this book because I was intrigued by the premise and hoping for a "best friends forever" based story but I really struggled to justify why Lucy and Adele were even friends to start with, as it mostly looked like Lucy never liked Adele on the first place and could hardly say that Adele cared for anyone. Lucy's lack of character as a prptagonist was, for me at least, was a disappointment and I found myself rolling my eyes at her several times.

After reading the blurb for this story I knew that I had to read this book. The Friendship Pact is an engrossing standalone novel that will have you hooked from the start, and will keep you on the edge of your seat till the thrilling finale. Told from the present day to the past, the story follows Lucy and Adele’s unlikely friendship from when they were tweens, and how one tragic event, ties them together forever. The characters of Lucy and Adele in the past, could not be more chalk and cheese. Lucy comes from a wealthy family, where Adele is from the wrong side of the tracks. Alison does a good job at conveying that just because they are not cut from the same cloth, doesn’t mean their friendship was not a solid one and their bond at the start is unbreakable. But after the tragic events on that summer’s day, the girls are separated, and their friendship comes to an end, but not before they make a pact that will keep what they witnessed that day just between the two of them for the rest of their lives. When we are taken to the present, as older women, there is not much difference to them. Lucy has it all with wealth, a beautiful home and a husband who is a well respected cardiac surgeon. But what goes on behind closed doors is very different to how her life is portrayed to the outside world. For Adele, she still lives in the town where they grew up, is a single mother of two children and has a police record convicted of fraud. After a chance meeting when Lucy returns to their hometown, she asks for Adele’s help in escaping from her husband, but it may just end up being the worst mistake that Lucy has ever made! This is the first book I have read from Alison. I enjoyed her writing style and how she was able to build up enough suspense to keep me enthralled and reading well into the night. I highly recommend this book and I look forward to reading more of Alison’s work. Thank-you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Alison James for allowing me to read an advance copy of The Friendship Pact in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and are not biased in anyway.
