Only I Can Save Them

‘Heart-wrenching… Heartbreaking… I couldn’t help but shed tears… Unable to put this down until the very last page… Truly remarkable.’ Page Turners, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Nazi-occupied Holland, 1942: As the iron gates of Westerbork transit camp clang shut behind him and his Jewish family, an icy hand of fear grips Rudolf. Forced to work as the camp photographer, every day he must take official pictures of those imprisoned behind the high wire fences. Every click of his camera breaks his heart a little more, but he knows he has no choice – he must do this to protect his own children.
The photos are for ID cards for the Nazis to document each healthy new arrival. But Rudolf knows the reality of life once they go through the iron gates is hardship and loss. He also hears that people in the camp are beginning to be ushered onto trains leaving Westerbork, and the whispered rumours about their destinations makes his blood run cold.
Then one day, through the open doors of a train carriage, he glimpses a child standing all by herself, her big brown eyes full of tears. She looks just like Ursula, his own little girl. And before he knows it, he has raised his camera to take a different kind of picture…
As the train pulls out of the station, Rudolf is faced with an impossible decision. Everything in him screams to protect his family no matter the cost, but using his camera to expose what the Nazis are doing could save thousands of lives. Can he share the truth and still protect the people he loves the most?
Inspired by the incredible true story of wartime photographer Rudolf Breslauer, Only I Can Save Them is a heart-rending tale about the choices we make in the darkest times. Fans of Heather Morris, The Midwife of Auschwitz and The Nightingale won’t be able to put this down.
