Bookouture – what’s in a name
bookouture might sound like a bit of a mouthful – but we chose it to capture the very essence of what we do.
Naming any new venture isn’t easy. Hours of brainstorming, evaluating, domain-name checking and brainstorming again are par for the course – until words seem to lose their meaning altogether!
Our vision was something that would give a sense of what we do, but still remain stylish and female focused.
On a more practical level we needed something distinctive which would work well with search engines and, as a publisher with a global market, we wanted a cool dotcom web address.
In the end we decided to create our own word – from two others (a portmanteau). Of course we can’t claim to be completely (or even remotely) original in that respect… Pinterest, Facebook, YouTube, iPhone, Starbucks and a thousand others all got there before us.
Book A printed or written literary work.
Couture The business of designing, making, and selling highly fashionable, usually custom-made clothing for women.
For us bookouture was the perfect fit – combining style and sophistication with a hint to the level of creativity, craft and attention to detail that goes into our publishing.
Of course, a name is just the start. Everything we do from here on in reflects on us and helps people to understand who we are. No one had even heard of Google or Amazon 15 years ago; but everyone now knows the names, understands what they do – and probably has an emotional reaction to the brand.
We hope over time you’ll come to recognize us as creative, smart, commercial – and just generally awesome. We’ll do everything we can to make sure of it.
So the name is just the beginning – but we hope you like it.
